What does "in trans" (written in italics) mean in microbiology?

I'm trying to understand microbial conjugation (horizontal gene transfer) and 'in trans' keeps coming up, its written in italics. for example, "..because the transfer regions contained on these plasmids are minimal, they are incapable of self-transfer and rely on mobilization function provided 'in trans'.."

any help would be appreciated. im sure its something simple but i cant seem to find a definition anywhere.|||when they are joined. As in transconjugation. I think....
